* MY UNDERTALE COVERS MADE IN CARDBOARD BOX :)

for the past year or so, ive been teaching myself music production using CardboardBox. To help me learn the ropes, i challenged myself to cover the ENTIRE Undertale soundtrack to the best of my ability. its one of my favorite soundtracks and i know all the songs pretty intimately. i've learned a lot so far!
in case you don't know what CardboardBox is yet... it is a free in-browser DAW that specializes in sharing chiptune sketches. It stores all of the data in the URL itself, which makes sharing very easy. it is a mod of Jummbox which is a mod of the original Beepbox.
I prefer CardboardBox because it has a lot of pre-set instruments and lots of tools that make things go smoother.
below you will find all of the songs i currently have done. each entry will include an audio file you can listen to, a link to the original file (in case you wanna see all the fun channels), and my commentary on each track. ill add new covers to this page whenever i finish them. thx for checking them out!! :)
all of these songs were originally written by the lovely Toby Fox. i am simply studying them for fun.

1 - Once Upon a Time
LINK 2 SONG

i had covered a few undertale songs for fun, but this was the first song i made after i was like "im gonna do this thing." its very happy and calming despite the sometimes gritty wave sounds. the beginning of a journey...

2 - Start Menu
LINK 2 SONG

simple and bouncy. ezpz.

3 - Your Best Friend
LINK 2 SONG

because i dont have access to samples or soundfonts, i have to adjust the presets myself. channel 2's sound was hard to figure out at first, but i picked it back up much later. did the best i could haha.

4 - Fallen Down
LINK 2 SONG

the first piano song on the soundtrack. i honestly dont like the grand piano sound in CB, but it gets the job done. toby's piano songs always get me since i feel like it connects to him more than songs done in FLS. i seem to remember hearing that he writes his song on his piano first, then translates them into FL. but the songs with piano reminds me that like oh yea, a guy wrote this with his own two hands.

5 - Ruins
LINK 2 SONG

this is honestly one of my favorite songs on the whole soundtrack. i remember my first playthrough of the ruins very vividly, and i think this song captures the vibe very well. its a fairly neutral tutorial space, you are slow to explore and learn the ropes, but the fasination of an unknown world is still there.
i REALLY enjoy the backing piano in the second part. I never paid much attention to it until i wrote out the notes myself, but now i really appreaciate it. this is also one of the first songs i learned that uses a 3/4 time signature.

6 - Uwa!! So Temperate
LINK 2 SONG

i didn't listen to the Uwa!! songs very often, but covering them made me grow to appreciate them. This one is probably my favorite Uwa!! it has an easy-listening melody and a sexy slap bass. i also love the drum loop a lot with the three hits at the end.

7 - Anticipation
LINK 2 SONG

idk what to say about this ... its just some instruments from Enemy Approaching. drums are fun tho.

8 - Unnecessary Tension
LINK 2 SONG

a simple song for a funny bit, but it does scratch my brain in a nice way.

9 - Enemy Approaching
LINK 2 SONG

i remember having trouble with this one because of figuring out the drum rhythm, instruments sound, chords, and trying to work in 2/2. (i just did 4/4 shhhh)

10 - Ghost Fight
LINK 2 SONG

im not super happy with the instrument tuning, but oh well. its a good song and i like how the two main instruments harmonize.

11 - Determination
LINK 2 SONG

i reeeeaaally love how the chiptune chords sound in this. :)

12 - Home
LINK 2 SONG

this was a bit frustrating. im guessing this was played live so there are some timing issues and irregularities that are hard to translate into loops. not to mention the BPM changes at the end. i am quite happy with how this turned out regardless. the guitar sound in CB is honestly not that bad!

14 - Heartache
LINK 2 SONG

oooooouuguuhuuhghhhh man this was so exciting to make!!! this song is in 6/8, which was a bit difficult to get used to at first. its also the first like. BIG song on the soundtrack. one thing i think Toby does super well is combining chiptune with orchestral instruments. Undertale is obviously inspired by RPGs of the 90s, which had limited music capabilities, so getting hit with the old chiptune you're used to and the new and very realistic sounding orchestra plugins works musically as well as conceptually. undertale is a new game made with modern software, which gives him the ability to emulate the limited technological capabilities of yesteryear while also ading unique new things that could only be capable on said modern hardware. you get it. it was also the first big tonal shift of the game, after a lot of goofy hijinks you are faced head to head with your mother-figure who will do anything to keep you safe. you can FEEL how powerful Toriel can be, but it also feels unsteady. i love love love this song its so,,, AUGH!!!

15 - sans.
LINK 2 SONG

the tuning for the main instrument was a bit weird. i love this song tho, i think it exemplifies all of Sans' qualities much more than megalovania. its goofy and fun with a deep bass/trombone. and juxtaposes the tense feeling after you shake his hand for the first time.

16 - Nyeh Heh Heh!
LINK 2 SONG

Basically a simplified version of Bonetrousle. I love its energy tho and i think it helps get the player to know Papyrus right off the bat. It's triumphant, classic, and a bit silly.

17 - Snowy
LINK 2 SONG

ohhh i love this piano piece. i probably like it more than Snowdin Town. its a nice way to settle in the game after being thrown into like three different plot-relevent situations back to back. a little respite to wander and think about what just happened. i love the gentle introduction of the strings in the middle of the song, it unifies the piano melody very well. then, it cuts back to just piano with a slightly different melody. it takes you out of the calm sway of the strings and brings you back a bit.

18 - Uwa!! So Holiday
LINK 2 SONG

im not super happy with the tuning of these instruments, ambient sounds are harder to do on CB. i still like this song, its very cute. :)

19 - Dogbass
LINK 2 SONG

i said i would cover EVERY song. its in the soundtrack so i had to!!!

21 - Dogsong
LINK 2 SONG

ah. right. the dog sound Toby uses is from Mario Paint, which...i dont have. I tried my best using the vocal and chorus sounds. its not as cute and funny, its kind of scary lol.

22 - Snowdin Town
LINK 2 SONG

24 - Bonetrousle
LINK 2 SONG

YESSSS!!! this song rules. the melody is super catchy and memorable. I don't have much to say, just a good ass song that exemplifies Papyrus' personality SUPER well.

25 - Dating Start!
LINK 2 SONG

i heard that the dating songs were based on the Ace Attourney music, and after watching my brother play them, i can absolutely see that. it sounds a lot like the Turnabout Sisters theme. Nintendo is SO GOOD at making the best chill ass easy-listening tunes. anyways. i had fun making this song, theres a lot of instruments and shifting around in a short span of time, so i just got to fiddle with things and not worry too much about timing

26 - Dating Tense!
LINK 2 SONG

going with Ace Attourney, its very similar to the suspenseful interrigation music. i really like how this song is set up with the cymbal and theramin sounds fading in and out. like thoughts rushing through your brain, or something.
side-note: i love all the homages to the things Toby likes in Undertale, it makes me happy to see artists be inspired to make stuff because of something cool someone else made!!! and now i am inspired to make stuff because of Toby's work.....its a whole legacy of artists being inspired by eachother. peace and love on planet earth.... :)

27 - Dating Fight!
LINK 2 SONG

this is like the big AH HA moments in Ace Attorney. the original song is super fun and energetic, but my tuning makes some of the instruments fall flat. i dont know why. i got very frustrated while making it and decided it was good enough. still, i like the tie-back to Papyrus' chiptune instruments in the latter half.

30 - Undyne
LINK 2 SONG

i was actually suprised at how much i liked how this turned out! i am not used to doing dark and brooding songs like this. i love the sliding warbbly instrument and had a lot of fun tuning it. its really fun against the deep drums.

31 - Waterfall
LINK 2 SONG

again, slower, more intense songs like this are not my thing, so i was suprised at how well it came out. i had lots of fun making the various sliding instruments. this is one of the most atmospheric songs i think, you can kind of assign each instrument to a part of the Waterfall. the high piano is like twinkling stars or water droplets. the violins are like buzzing insects in the marsh. the crash cymbal is like water splashing and waves. the foreboding, low piano is the looming fear of Undyne. the middle piano melody ties it together, maybe that's the player. anyways, its a good song that gives me Feelings. i remember after beating Papyrus for the first time, i was a bit scared for what was to come.

32 - Run!
LINK 2 SONG

after covering this song, i actually started listening to it more often in my own time. its very short, but the piano is really addicting, with the harmonious running across the piano and the sudden slamming.

33 - Quiet Water
LINK 2 SONG

this was actually kind of hard to get a handle on, just because its SO slow. CB was not meant to go this slow.

34 - Memory
LINK 2 SONG

i heard this song pleanty of times on the soundtrack, but it actually took me a while untill i tried the easter egg myself. i do like this song, but something about music box sounds activates my fight or flight response when i make songs. i dont know why.

35 - Bird That Carries You Over a Disproportionately Small Gap
LINK 2 SONG

i thought this would be a lot more complicated for some reason. it was really fun to make, and made me laugh a lot because it reminded me of the joke in the game, haha. im not particularly happy with how loud the bells are, and certain instruments could be a bit better, but im satisfied enough.

37 - Pathetic House
LINK 2 SONG

god its so........painfully........slow..............i like how the tuning came out tho!! even though its just like. a slightly tweaked squarewave.

38 - Spooktune
LINK 2 SONG

the tumpet. bwaaa.

39 - Spookwave
LINK 2 SONG

i dont know what to say about this

40 - Ghouliday
LINK 2 SONG

i gave up on tuning this lol

41 - Chill
LINK 2 SONG

i think this bit in the game is very nice. i like doing nothing and just enjoying the space with another person, and the nature of RPGs is to keep pressing forward. its a nice change of pace.

43 - Temmie Village
LINK 2 SONG

hOI !!! fun fact, me and my friends would say HOI to eachother in middle school because of Undertale, we thought it was the funniest shit. because i can't use samples in CB, it doesn't get across how silly and weird its supposed to be as much. It just sounds like something i would make on my dads computer when i was 9 or something.

44 - Tem Shop
LINK 2 SONG

i wish i could get the tuning to be more like... fucked up. the original song makes me laugh at just how INTENSE the sounds are in this otherwise very cute melody. its like when you're calling someone on discord and they put their mouth right against the mic so it becomes blown out and distorted, everything becomes funnier.

this song is like this image.

45 - NGAHHH!!
LINK 2 SONG

YEAAHHH i love this song!! its so fun and BOOMING you can feel Undynes ANGER!!!! YEAHHHHHHAHAHAHHA!!!!

47 - Ooo
LINK 2 SONG

oooooooo

48 - Alphys
LINK 2 SONG

this song was suprisingly fun to make! the song switches between 3/4 and 5/4. i think the uncommon time signatures, the warbly sounds, and the dischordinant uh... chords create an anxious and unsteady feeling. its all still extremely charming and cute regardless. thats how i feel about Alphys in general, a nervous wreck but she really tries, so you pity her a bit. like she's a bit weird, but she really tries. :) (this is before we find out the Atrocities she commited but dont worry about it.)

49 - It's Showtime!
LINK 2 SONG

i wish i could get the tuning right on this one... its a bit grating. what a FUN bassline though!! so funky fresh. im glad we get that bit at the end with just the bass.

50 - Metal Crusher
LINK 2 SONG

im SO GLAD CB has this Atari Bass sound, it was perfect for this song. i do wish the ungulating synth could be a bit more in the background though.

51 - Another Medium
LINK 2 SONG

okay. this is probably my favorite song i've ever covered. im SO proud of this, and i adore this song. i learned a lot just from this one song about Toby's writing style. this song was what inspired me to post all of these songs in the first place.
im going to go on a bit of a tangent. so, Another Medium was originally written for Homestuck (originally titled Patient), but went unused. i believe it was something for LOWAS. it was a remix of Doctor, which Toby has said is one of his favorite Homestuck songs and that writing the remix "Savior of the Waking World" was a turning point for him as a musician.
a specific remnant of Doctor that i had found left over in Another Medium was in the main melody. in my cover you can see that channels 1 and 2 are the same notes, but shifted forward by one beat, making a very whistful dedleededleededlee sound.
i had previously covered Doctor as well, and while trying to figure out this specific sound, i came across this video Buzinkai herself made explaining how Doctor was composed. and... she did the exact same thing! essentially copying the track and moving the notes forward by one beat. you can see this in my Doctor cover here.

look!!! it's the same thing!!!
it's a really small and unimportant thing, and im sure other people knew this already, but it was a really nice discovery i made while covering Another Medium. also, Another Medium and Doctor both use the drums from Cave Story.
this tangent is just another thing that solidifies the fact for me that Undertale was made out of allllll the bits and pieces of media that Toby loves. practically every part of it is built out of the pure LOVE that comes from creative communities inspiring one another. and that makes me so so so happy!! thats what lifes all about baby!!!!!!!!

52 - Uwa!! So HEATS!!?
LINK 2 SONG

i looooove these instruments. i wish this song was longer and more varried like Uwa!! So Temperate.

54 - Hotel
LINK 2 SONG

ahhh....so fun and relaxing...... i really enjoy how the instruments sound and play off of one another, everything feels very unified. its lively, its fun, its toe-tappin music.

55 - Can You Really Call This A Hotel, I Didn't Receive A Mint On My Pillow Or Anything
LINK 2 SONG

this song was easy to cover, since its really just Hotel but faster, but i honestly prefer it. it takes that lively head-bopping melody and amps it up. i just wish you could hear more of it in the game...

57 - Live Report
LINK 2 SONG

a BREAKING NEWS sting with It's Showtime!'s melody, pretty simple.

61 - Oh! One True Love
LINK 2 SONG

I don't listen to this song a lot, but it reminds me of this Mettaton scene which makes me laugh. I think the singing voice really pushes the absurdity of it.

63 - It's Raining Somewhere Else
LINK 2 SONG

This is another one of my favorites. This is technically a Sans song, but it's completely unlike him. its really the theme for the resturaunt. it has a leitmotif from the song sans., but its more similar to the hotel songs. maybe its supposed to juxtapose the dialouge. this chill, easy-listening lounge music being played in a public place, while you're having a pretty intense conversation with Sans.

64 - Core Approach
LINK 2 SONG

i honestly wish there was a longer version of this. it's just supposed to be a transition from the Hotel to the Core, but i really like the minor arangement of this.

68 - Death by Glamour
LINK 2 SONG

LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOOOOOO!!! one of my favs hands down. i'm extremely proud of this!! i was suprised that i was able to emulate so many of the sounds, since it isn't terribly chiptune heavy. toby sure does love slap bass, it kicks ass. i'm not super happy with the small bell noises in the It's Showtime! section, but i couldn't figure out anything better haha.

69 - For the Fans
LINK 2 SONG

a

70 - Long Elevator
LINK 2 SONG

71 - Undertale
LINK 2 SONG

oouugghhhhhgh this song makes me CRY. The fact that it is called Undertale makes me imagine this as Undertales theme song. i really really enjoy the slow build of this song to go along with the rising action of the game scene. it's really just one melody being played for 5 minutes, but each instrument adds more and more complexity to the song. the HARD cut to the bridge keeps things interesting. and then bringing the first instrument back to the forefront, tieing ALL the instruments together. and THEN the shift in key in the last section!!! aughhgh!!! i love it so much.

72 - Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans
LINK 2 SONG

god this song was hard, it's so FAST! i do really enjoy how this turned out, it was both fun and frustrating to make. i barely noticed that this was a sans. melody while listening to it.

76 - Bergentruckung
LINK 2 SONG

fingers in his ass.

77 - ASGORE
LINK 2 SONG

i was pretty hesitant to start this one, it seemed intimidating. it was fun to work on tho! it's a really great mix of chiptune and orchestral instruments. i think it is a really nice throwback to classic video game FINAL BOSS songs, but amped up with the inclusion of the orchestra. kicks ass as per usual.

79 - Your Best Nightmare
LINK 2 SONG

this was suprisingly easy to get a handle on, after struggling with the 2/2 time signature a bit. theres only about max 4 instruments and 2 drums playing at once, and a lot of patterns are extremely similar, so it was mainly about tuning the instruments as best as i could. since most of the instruments are chip tune in the original, i was able to get pretty close in my tunings. i don't think i got the intensity of the main sections that the original has, that extremely foreboding sense of dread, but i'm happy with my version! also this song has the most bars out of any that i've covered, 184 bars!! because of the time signature essentially multiplying the normal amount by 2.

80 - Finale
LINK 2 SONG

i didn't listen to a lot of the last act songs very often because i thought they mostly sounded the same, but going back i REALLY love this one. i really love the sliding synth and how it cuts through all of the dramatic orchestral instruments.

81 - An Ending
LINK 2 SONG

i do think the CB piano is pretty good, but i don't think anything except a live piano could do it justice. everything just fits together effortlessly. it doesn't sound like a terribly complicated piano piece either, but its just seamless and flowing in its execution, which makes it so remarkable. i don't know anything about the piano but WHATEVER ITS GOOD!!!

82 - She's Playing Piano
LINK 2 SONG

man. idk what it is about this song that makes me like. emotional. maybe because it sounds so far away it sounds a bit lonely. and angry, since shes slamming the keys, or maybe thats just how she normally plays. the chords slightly remind me of Doctor by Buzinkai? i could be wrong though.

83 - Here We Are
LINK 2 SONG

i actually covered this song pretty early on, because i wanted to try out the odd 10/8 time signature. the time signature really adds to the uncanniness of the True Lab, like you don't really know what to expect, since everything is so unlike what you're used to. i think the chorus was a good choice too, like they're the voices of the Amalgamates......ooOOOOooOOOoOOo........

I'm the original Starwalker
